Jackson has completed Mereway Sluice replacement scheme

Jackson has replaced the tilting weir gate at Mereway Sluice situated on the River Crane in Twickenham, on behalf of the Environment Agency.

The sluice is a single, automatic tilting weir gate of steel construction. The mechanical, electrical and control components were nearing the end of their operational life which puts 497 properties at risk of flooding.

Jackson undertook works to remove the existing tilting weir and replace it with a modern stainless steel gate. The scope also included a new footbridge over the weir to allow access to the new penstock and trash screen also installed as part of the project.

Throughout the project, the team maintained water levels as part of the flow management in order to meet the legal requirement to supply a sewerage treatment plant with water for extraction further downstream.

Contracts Manager, Frank Pizzardi said: “We were glad to see another asset renewed that would improve and protect the lives and properties of so many people in this immediate area and beyond.”

“It has also been very rewarding to have overcome the various logistical challenges with such a large structure in this confined environment. We were especially happy with the collaborative working between us and the various EA staff not only throughout the works but more so in times of flood mitigation.”
